PPA Challenge

I want to start out this post by wishing my son, Michael a happy 16th birthday! I know everyone says this, but wow, time does fly. As with any parent/child relationship, we've had our ups and downs, but the downs have been few. Michael is a wonderful young man and I am very proud of him and all he has accomplished to this point.

So, on to the challenge. Well, last week I talked about how the sketches usually challenge me. This one, took one look and as my sister says, there it was, done.

I made an anniversary card a few weeks ago and pulled out my old Fifth Avenue Floral stamp set (it's the flower thing again, I just can't seem to let them go!). As I finished that card, I thought - hmmm, this stamp is calling for Blendabilities! I heat embossed the image in white onto Whisper White and went to work, coloring one petal at a time with Cherry Cobbler. When I completed all the petals, I went over the entire image, including the white embossing, with the lightest color then promptly set it aside waiting for just the right spot for it. I never thought is would come so soon!

I've not yet added anything to the inside; this card could be used for so many occasions - it may not be the only one like this that I end up making! I hope you enjoy it enough to want to play along with the Pals! Please leave a comment, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Until next time, take gentle care,

PPA Challenge - Play along with the Pals!

This week's challenge!

PPA216
I've mentioned before that the layout challenges often times cause me to do some serious thinking and this week's challenge is no exception. Although I like the clean and simple look, I frequently think my cards look naked, so I then proceed to dress them up a bit more, which is what I did with the layout challenge for this week.

The fun thing with these challenges is the ability to see the basic idea and run with it. Come on! Give it a try - play along with the Pals!

Until next time, take gentle care,

Paper: Lost Lagoon, Pistachio Pudding, All Abloom DSP paper stack, Basic Black, Whisper White
Ink: Versamark

PPA Challenge

It's time for another PPA Color Challenge!

As I looked at the colors for this week's challenge I also thought about which stamp set I had on the shelf that is under used and remembered that I need to make some baby cards for a local gift shop. Here's my challenge card for this week.

I
Note I don't have Pear Pizzazz, so I used retired Certainly Celery. Please leave a comment to tell me what you think.

Until next time, take gentle care,

Recipe:
Paper: Certainly Celery, Strawberry Slush, Basic Black, Whisper White
Ink: Strawberry Slush, Certainly Celery, Memento Tuxedo Black (inside sentiment: So Happy For You)
Stamps: Bravo, Something for Baby
Accessories: Big Shot, Baby's First Framelit, Banners Framelits, Certainly Celery Striped Ribbon, Dimensionals, Snail Adhesive

Swallowtail

As promised, I'm back with another sample of the embossing technique used in yesterday's post. This card is a CASE from Michelle Zindorf, an amazing artist and teacher. Several years ago, prior to becoming a SU! demo, I was able to attend a class that Michelle was teaching in a nearby town. I am a crafter, but a session with her made me feel like an artist!

In addition to the embossing technique, this card includes some brayer work, a little sponging, masking and if you look closely, you'll see lines created by the Simply Scored Scoring Tool.

A card like this needs no sentiment, it's lovely on it's own. If you have any questions, leave a comment and I'll get back with you asap!

Thanks for stopping and until next time, take gentle care,

Pals Blog Hop By the Seashore

2014aughop_badge
Welcome to the Blog Hop for August. This month we are showing off our favorite crafting tools - those Stampin' Up! tools that we just can't live without. We hope you enjoy our projects!
You may just be starting the blog hop or may have come from Mary Fish at Stampin' Pretty, #39 on the Pals Hop. If you get off track at any time, the full lineup below will help you move along from blog to blog so you see all of the amazing creations.
My favorite tool... it truly is like choosing the favorite child, they are all dear in their very own way, but let me share some of my most used tools!

Today's project is a set of 3 x 3 cards and a coordinating box in which to put them. I know the holiday catalog is much anticipated and many folks are providing sneak peaks, but I'm hanging on to the last days of summer, so I broke out my By the Seashore stamp set for my project.

Every card I make starts with the Stampin' Trimmer. SU! has the best cutting tool in town, one that can handle a 12 x 12 piece of CS or DSP with no problem. This wonderful tool can also score your project! A good cutting tool is a must have for every papercrafter.

My box was created using the Simply Scored Scoring Tool. The projects you can make with this handy dandy tool are ENDLESS! The companion Simply Scored Diagonal Plate and Simply Scored Borders Plate triple the usefulness of this amazing tool.

To create my beach scene, I used a post-it note to mask my paper and sponged Crumb Cake on the bottom of the card to create the sand. Next step was to reposition the paper and sponge in the white space with Pool Party. I filled in the horizon line with Coastal Cabana to provide the sea in the landscape.

In this photo, you can see the shine on the seashell. I used a technique that is a take off on emboss resist. I stamped my image using Stazon black ink and colored it in using a blender pen, Sahara Sand, Crumb Cake and Soft Suede ink. I then covered the image with Versamark ink, covered that with clear embossing powder and used my heat tool - another favorite! The end product is this shiny effect. For more depth to your project, you can actually layer color on the embossed layer and emboss the image again.

For the box, I used another must have tool, the paper snips, to cut out my images and then popped one of the shells up using dimensionals - are they a tool?? Not sure, but I do know they're wonderful!!

So, my must have tools? The Stampin' Trimmer, Simply Scored Scoring Tool, the Heat Tool and the Paper Snips. These are basics that should be in the tool kit for every papercrafter! To purchase any of these items, click on the product name and you'll go straight to my 24/7 online store.

If you enjoyed learning this technique, please leave a comment. Stop back tomorrow for another sample using this fun technique.
The next stop is Beth Beard at My Little Craft Blog, #2 on the Pals Blog Hop! Thanks for visiting and  I hope to see you next month.

It's PPA Challenge Day!

If you've not done challenges in the past, they are a great way to stretch your creativity. There are many challenges out there in which to participate, but my favorite is the Pal's Paper Arts Challenge.

The Pals are a group of hobby and business stampers under the leadership of Mary Fish. The group has a very active, positive and supportive Facebook page, which, until convention is where I got to know members of the Pals group. When I told friends of mine that I was going to the Stampin' Up! convention in Salt Lake City, the first question was, "Who are you going with?" I received a wide range of responses when I said I travelling alone and that I had never met any of the people who were going to be there - including my roommate! Two of my besties thought I was nuts and one made me promise I'd contact her when I got to SLC to assure her that my roommate was not an ax murderer. After meeting my roomie Janet Christen Tomky, I was able to call Wendy to inform her that all was well!

Janet and I after the awards event, Convention 2014

So you may be thinking, what does all of this have to do with the PPA Challenge? Hold on for one more moment.

This week we have a color challenge. I found color challenges to be a bit easier than sketch challenges, so if you're just beginning to play along, this is a great starting point.

For this challenge, I broke out my What's Your Type? stamp set. I first saw this at the annual catalog reveal and thought, who would want that? But the more I saw of it, the more fun I thought it would be to play with.

Okay, the time has come for the tie-in between the challenge and the Pals:

I do "heart" the Pals. Everyone in the group made me feel so welcomed. It was great putting names and faces together, sharing ideas and laughs. If you've ever considered becoming a Stampin' Up! demonstrator either to get a discount on your hobby or to share your love of stamping with others, I would encourage you to become a Pal. $125 in products (including items from the not yet released to the general public holiday catalog) can be yours for only $99! I'm looking for local and long distance stamping buddies. Give me a call or send a quick email; I'd love to talk with you!

If you rise to the challenge, please send me a photo of your project; one of the best parts of stamping is sharing!

Until next time, take gentle care,
