Loving the versatility of Work of Art

I'm gearing up for my September Work of Art class, preparing lots of samples to share, so thought I'd use this week's PPA challenge in one of my samples.

This is a bright, fun combination, perfect for a festive birthday card. The Work of Art stamp presents endless possibilities. Stay tuned for more projects using this stamp set.

Email error

Hi all,

Thanks to those of you who let me know you are unable to view my video tutorial from the email you received. This is the first video tutorial I've done and I have some homework to do to assure this doesn't happen again. That being said, if you go directly to my blog, the video link works there.

So break out the popcorn, get comfy and click HERE to view the tutorial.

Life at my full time job has been hectic; we are experience some major growing pains and everyone is stretched to their limit. As an HR professional, I don't have the skill set to be an extra set of hands that could get the work done, but I can be a cheerleader! You've maybe read my comments about my DSP stash that I'm really trying to use up. Over the weekend I made 34 candy bar boxes and filled them with full size Snickers bars.

I turned on a Netflix movie, scored, burnished, cut, formed and embellished. It was very relaxing. I did have to chuckle when at one point I realized that I had a blister from burnishing - now that is dedication to a paper addiction! The treats were very much appreciated and one of the staff was collecting everyone's boxes so she could use them again! For me, one of the best parts of stamping is giving things away, especially when my craft work is appreciated.

Thanks so much for your support, it means a great deal to me! By the time I create my next video, I'll have this bug figured out.

Until next time, take gentle care,

Too Cool for School Blog Hop

Welcome to the Pals Blog Hop for August.  This month we are showing off our favorite crafting tools – those Stampin’ Up! tools that we just can’t live without.  We hope you enjoy our projects.
You may just be starting the blog hop or may have come from Deb Cozzone's Stamping Zone, number 20 on the Pals Hop.  If you get off track at any time, the full lineup below will help you move along from blog to blog so you see all the projects.

Choosing one tool was a bit of a challenge, but I recently found a fun fold that I wanted to showcase that is a snap to make using the Simply Scored Scoring Tool and Diagonal Plate. Check out this fun pop up card!
My card base is Bermuda Bay cut at 4 1/4 x 11 and scored at 5 1/2. The festive DSP is from the Cherry on Top Paper stack - there are so many fun options in that stack! Choosing coordinating colors was a breeze, I picked from the list on the cover of the DSP stack, Bermuda Bay, Watermelon Wonder and Crushed Curry - no thinking involved! I used the Big News stamp set for my images in this card and coordinated the ink with the paper. With the Triple Banner Punch to the rescue, I created my focal image in a snap. The dreamy Watermelon Wonder lace ribbon was the perfect finishing touch for my card front.

Check out the fun fold inside of the card! This fold really packs a wow factor and is so easy to make especially when using the Simply Scored Tool and Diagonal Score board. This sample starts with a piece of Whisper White measuring 7" x 7". I scored at 3 1/2, turned the page 90 degrees and scored again at 3 1/2. Using the diagonal plate, I scored from the top left corner to the bottom right corner.  Burnish the score lines, fold the paper and adhere to the inside of your card. I again used the Cherry on Top DSP stack to cut 3" x  3" squares to layer inside the card. DSP works better for layering due to its lighter weight. To divide the sections, I sponged on both sides of the score line with Bermuda Bay ink. Once complete, I gave the Whisper White a slight trim which resulted in the notches you see.
I made another sample using a piece of Whisper White measuring 6" x 6". The same technique was used, but this time I scored the paper at 3", turned it 90 degrees, scored again at 3" and then scored it diagonally. With this size, there is no need to trim the Whisper White paper--no notches.

To show you how to create this fold and to better explain the difference between the two samples, I created my very first video tutorial! Come back tomorrow to view the tutorial or sign up to follow me by email and the tutorial for this card will be delivered to your email box tomorrow morning!

The next stop is Jennifer Spiller at Westside Paper Creations, number 22 on the Pals Blog Hop! Thanks so much for hopping with the Pals. Be sure to stop back next month. I hope you enjoyed my project and look forward to reading your comments. Make this day a great one!

A July Update and a PPA Challenge

Wow, July was a crazy month. My son and I flew out on July 3rd for a trip to England. We flew in to London, spent 5 days there then took a train to Liverpool for 3 days, back to London and home. My son was able to meet two of the friends he's been gaming with for several years. It was fun for me to put live versus virtual faces to them. We also took in some of the historic sites and saw "Jersey Boys" at Picadilly Theater. I had prepared Michael for the West End interval when ice cream is available for purchase - a bit of something that Broadway doesn't offer. We had a great week and a long day of travelling to get home.

The Friday after we returned, Michael has his wisdom teeth extracted - oh what a good time. He actually did very well, a bit of swelling the first day or so, but no bruising, so that was good. The week after that he started his first job and I left for the Stampin' Up! convention in Salt Lake City!

I went to convention last year and had so much fun meeting the Pals that I decided to go again. I joined Stampin' Up! under Mary Fish and her group is called the Pals. What a great bunch of people! I roomed with Janet, my roomie from last year and it was great catching up with her. We met through the Pals facebook chat last year prior to convention when we were both seeking a roommate. Amazing friendships are made because of paper, ink and a bit of glue!

The photo above was taken prior to the first session. We all received our convention bags and card swapping was in full swing!

And here's Janet! We were waiting for our make and take class to begin.

We saw hundreds of beautiful card samples, swapped dozens of cards, received many new stamp sets, DSP and accessories and brought home so many memories. One of the definite highlights of the trip was getting my hands on the new holiday catalog that will be effective September 1. Contact me if you would like to be on my mailing list to receive a catalog. You're going to LOVE it!

So, after all of that, I finally worked a five day week last week and have been playing in my craft room. It's been a while since I've done a PPA challenge and I thought I better get back at it. Luckily, this week is a color challenge and I think they are a bit easier to do than the layout challenges.
Pals Paper Arts Color Challenge PPA 262

For this challenge, I cased a card from the annual catalog's page 129. I knew the Watercolor Wash and Tip Top Taupe would be a great match.

I used a couple different techniques when creating the butterflies. The top element is simply
Mint Macaron run through the Big Shot with the Bold Butterflies framelits, finished off with a snippet of Pool Party Bakers Twine I had in my stash. The middle butterfly was made with Pool Party cartdstock and the Butterflies Thinlits. The fact that you can coordinate these two sets of thinlits and create fabulous projects is a great justification for HAVING to have both sets;) No, really, you do need both sets! On this Pool Party butterfly, I used a stamp from Sheltering Trees, versamark ink and white embossing powder to give a bit of texture, top it off with bling and I was good to go! Hello You Thinlits were used for the sentiment. The holiday catalog has a new adhesive that is a MUST HAVE for small, detailed items like this. The tip is teeny tiny, made just for small spaces. For the bottom butterfly, I sponged cardstock with Mint Macaron and Pool Party and ran it through the Big Shot for my base and then created a Mint Macaron butterfly for an overlay. That was topped with a Pool Party candy dot and we have come to the end of the story!
Last, but not least, I stamped the inside of the card to add a bit of interest. This was a fun
card to create, used several different techniques, although you could easily keep it simple. TIP: This would be a great card to make with friends. Start with a simple version and then make one stepped up using the different techniques for the butterflies. Be sure to check out the other creations at http://www.palspaperarts.com/. Get inspired and join the fun!
